Enjoyed the layers of circling around marriage/commitment/community.
I married at 22 in a non-traditional Catholic wedding back in 1980. Still married - and appreciate all the feminist/patriarchal gymnastics that go on. And the family calculus needed. I was the eldest of six daughters, just not the one that was going to get married with a long white dress taking a long walk to the altar, given away by my dad.
My husband found a one size fits all wedding dress on Cosmopolitan magazine. Turns out my grandmother was born during the flapper era and had a three-quarter length wedding dress too. I had my mom and dad walk me down the aisle. We had 1500 chocolate chip cookies I made tiered in transparent bowls that made it look like a cookie cake. A
t the time I signed my last name as a hyphenated, but within months I was so pissed off with everybody dropping my name, that I went back to my original name.
Thank you for a delightful podcast and a trip down memory lane :-)
